In this tutorial, I am going to show how you can weave a doll dress using plastic wire. This was one of the showcase items in India during 1980s. This project was usually made using leftover wire after weaving baskets.
For this Disney princess doll that is 6 inches tall, I used 12 pieces of wire (Each is 1.25 meters long). Increase length if the doll is taller. Increase number of pieces if the doll has broader shoulders.
Leaving 4 inches on one side, make a box knot like shown below. (Tutorial for box knot here)
Continue with next row.
After 3rd row, you should have a diamond shape like this.
Make one more identical diamond.
Now place the two diamonds facing each other so that the two long arms intersect each other. Add beads and start making knots by weaving wires that intersect each other.
Now the two diamonds have been joined and a third diamond has formed.
Before joining on the other side, we have to wrap this around the doll like a shawl.
Add a bead on all the 6 wires and weave the front side.
Now is the time to tuck in the short wire pieces.
Now lets get started with the sides. Add a bead on each wire.
And make knots on both sides.
The back of the doll will look like this.
Now we shall start the skirt part.
We will increase the diameter of the skirt now. Detailed explanation for this can also be found in the hat tutorial also.
To make the increase seamless and not too abrupt, I am adding 4 additional pieces of wires (2 on right and 2 on the left / 2 in the front and 2 in the back).
The picture below shows how this is done.
2 new pieces added on this side.
And you can see the increase in diameter. If this step is skipped, the dress will look like a tube.
Two more added on the other side. Now it is time to knot as usual and weave the skirt.
Instead of the diamond pattern, I added the beads to form a chevron or zigzag pattern.
Skirt is done.
You can stop with this and tuck in the additional wire.
For the next part of the skirt, we will be using running wire. We will also be using these tubes. Ask for them when buying the basket wire. They are used instead of beads as they can be cut to any length.
We need these tubes and cannot use beads alone because, for each row, the length of the tubes will vary. First decide the number of rows and then decide the length of the tubes in each row.
Then lace the tubes into the running wire as shown above. The tubes that will be used in the outermost round will be added first. For the inner most circle, I am using beads. So they will be added last.
Leave 3 inches of the running wire (will be tucked in later), make a box knot with the running wire and then drag a bead down and then make the next knot.
So the pattern will be one knot, one bead, followed by one knot.
After the first round, the doll dress will look like this.
Starting second row now with tubes. The tubes have been cut slightly longer than the beads.
Doll dress is done.
