This tutorial shows how you can weave this cute colorful Christmas star / rainbow star with plastic wire.
To make this star, we will first make 5 cones and join them together.
The cone needed for the star is the same cone that we made for the cone shaped flower vase.
In case you are not familiar with the cone shaped flower vase, here are the written and video tutorials for the cone.
You can find the written tutorial for cone shaped vase here
To avoid repetition, I am not going to show how the cone is made as I have already posted a detailed tutorial for the same in this blog. So we will directly proceed to joining the cones to make the star.
- For this star, we will be making the cone with wire pieces that are 150 cms long. For flower vase, we used longer wire pieces so that beads and flowers can be added to their tips.
- We also used more number of wires for flower vase. For this star, we will use only 13 pieces. Other than these two differences, the method for making cone is the same.
So make 5 cones with 13 pieces each. Each wire will be 150 cms long.
Since this woven rainbow Christmas star is a project made with leftover wire, I am going to make cones in 5 different colors. You can make it with just one color or use 5 different colors.
The cones are ready to be joined. Place two cones side by side. To join the two cones, we will be weaving wires coming out of 8 knots from the first cone into 8 knots of the second cone..
As you can see above, the spot were the wire comes out of a knot is the same spot where the wire from next cone enters that knot.
After all 8 pieces have been passed through the knots, your cones will look like the image shown above.
Now pull the ends of the wires and this will pull the cones closer to each other.
Take each wire piece and wrap it around the knot it entered as shown below.
Use a small screw diver if you need some extra help to weave the wires around the knots.
Join all the cones one by one.
After wires from 8 knots in both cones are interwoven, the next two wires will cross each other as seen below.
Make a knot with them.
You can now cut the wires coming out of the 8 knots. You don’t have to cut too close as they won’t be visible at night.
There will be a small hole in the middle. It will have 5 knots as its border.
Now flip the star. It is time to work on the other side of star.
Here also we will start weaving the cones together.
5 wires from each cone will be woven to form a diamond.
There will be a diamond between two cones.
A total of 5 diamonds have to be made.
Now it is time to join the diamonds just like we joined the star on the other side of the star.
Weave the wires through the knots and then pull them to pull the cones closer to each other.
Now wrap the wire against the knot. In the picture below, the circled left most knot shows how the wire has been wrapped around it.
To do this, you have to wrap the wire around the knot and then weave it as shown below.
To use this as a Christmas star, we have to allow a gap through which a light bulb can enter the star.
So I joined two diamonds on the left and two on the right. The fifth diamond was not joined to anything else.
Weave in all excess wires.
Back side of the star is done. If the hole in the front bothers you, you can add a amla knot to cover it up.
Here is the tutorial for amla knot. Place the knot and insert the wire ends into holes so the ends of those wires can be tucked in under the knots on the inside of the star.
Colorful woven Christmas star/ rainbow star is ready.
