This tutorial shows how you can weave this horse with plastic wire.
You have to know to weave box knot (basic knot) and jackfruit / jasmine knot to make this horse. If you are not familiar with them, here are the photo and video tutorials.
Note: The procedure has been broken down into easy to follow steps with detailed instructions and photos. But this is not a beginner project. So if you are new to weaving, you should try a sling bag or basket before attempting 3D shapes as they can get a little complicated for beginners.
You will need 22 pieces of wire that are 3.25 meters each.
We will use 4 pieces of wire for each leg. So we will start weaving the horse with 16 pieces of wire. Set aside the other 6 pieces and we will be adding them later on.
Tutorial for weaving 3D horse with plastic wire
Weaving the horse’s leg
We will first start with the 4 legs. You will use 4 wire pieces for each leg. Make two box knots. Now we have to join them. Place them next to each other and make knots with wires that cross each other. A diamond shape will form.
There are 4 pairs of parallel wires. Make knots with them. A triangle shaped hole will be formed below each of the 4 knots.
Now the leg has a shallow cup shape. Make knots with wires that cross each other till each of the 4 sides in 2 diamonds tall.
Next we have to create a bend in the horse’s legs. Choose one side and make it 3 diamonds tall. The other three sides will be shorter than this side. The tall side will have 2 pairs of parallel wires. Yellow arrow points to them in the image below. Make knots with them. Again 2 triangles will be formed. This will create a bend in the horse’s leg.
Make a knot with wires coming out of the two knots that you just made.
Turn to the side of the leg and start weaving knots with wires that cross each other.
2 pentagon shaped holes will be formed.
Now continue to weave knots with wires that cross each other till the leg is 3 diamonds tall above the bend.
The leg has 3 diamonds (red arrows point to them in the picture below.) Follow the same procedure to make 3 more legs.
Joining the horse’s legs
Place two legs near each other in such a way that they are facing the same direction as shown below. Two knots (one from each leg) will be right next to each other (red circle). These two have to be joined just as we join any two basic knots.
Place those two knots next to each other and join them. A diamond shape is formed between the two legs.
Continue to weave and make knots with wires that cross each other. Two pentagons will be formed as shown below.
Repeat the same for the other two legs as well.
Right now, the two legs that you joined will look like the image on the left (below)
Now we are going to join the two pairs of legs to form the underbelly. The legs have to be placed in this direction, facing each other, when they are joined.
Weaving underbelly of horse
But before we join, we have to do something to make sure the forelegs and hind legs are not too close to each other. If the legs are joined now, the horse’s body will have a square shape rather than a rectangle shape.
We set aside 6 wires pieces initially. Now is the time to use 2 of them. Find the side that will be facing the belly and add two wires to them as shown below. Red arrows are pointing to the 2 new wires that were introduced in this step.
As you can see, there is one diamond formed between the legs (red diamond). There is one diamond facing us and there are 2 diamonds on the other side in which new wires were added.
Repeat the same for the other set of legs as well. You have to make sure that you extend the correct side.
Now place the forelimbs and hind limbs facing each other and join the two tips.
Now all 4 legs have been joined together. Now it is time to weave the belly of the horse.
Weaving the belly of the horse
Next 3 rows are simple. All you have to do is find wires that cross each other and make knots.
Row 1: You will make 4 knots.
Row 2: You will be making 5 knots in this row.
Row 3: You will be making 6 knots in this row. The first and last knots will form hexagon shaped holes (5 knots).
Now the belly of the horse is done and we are ready to weave the body of the horse.
Weaving the body of the horse
Whenever you find wires that cross each other, make knots with them. Do this all around so that the body grows till it is 2 diamonds tall.
Next we are going to join both sides of the body at the top (spine / backbone part).
Ignore the head and tail ends and grow the two sides of the body alone as show below. The tip of the triangle has to be in the middle of the body. The triangle will be 2 diamonds tall.
As you can see above, this triangle started with 5 knots as its base and then the numbers reduced in every row till the triangle was formed.
Both sides are now ready to be joined. Place the two tips near each other and join them.
A diamond is formed at the top of the body and the wires have been split into two equal parts.
Wires on one side will be used to weaving the horse’s head and wires on the other side will be used to weave the horse’s back.
Important: Before proceeding to next step, count and make sure there are equal number of wires on both sides. There will be 20 wire pieces on each side. Correct any mistake before you proceed to next step.
Weaving the horse’s back / tail end
By now, the horse’s body will be 2 diamonds tall. Now choose one end as the head side and one end as the tail end.
Add 4 knots as shown below. Then add one knot between 1st and 2nd knot and another knot between the 3rd and 4th knot.
The body has been growing vertically and now it is time to change direction by turning the corner. There will be a pair of parallel wires on the left and right (yellow arrows point to them). Make knots with them and a triangle shaped hole will be formed on both sides.
The two corners have been turned and not it is time to weave the top of the body.
For this, we have to start weaving from the middle of the body (spine area) towards the tail end. One wire will travel right and another will travel left.
Like shown with the yellow arrow above, use that wire as running wire and bring it to the back/ tail end.
At the end of each journey, you will face a situation where making a knot will form a hexagon (5 knots around the hole) instead of the usual square shaped holes between knots.
Do not add a knot there. Instead just weave the wires through the nearby knot just like we did in the rainbow star.
As you can see above, the wires are inserted into the neighboring knot.
The line should travel smoothly from the middle of the horse to its tail end as shown above. We used this same technique of joining two knots in the star. (Clear instructions have been given for this step in that tutorial. Do check it out if you are having difficulty). FYI, this is also shown in the tutorial video around the 40th minute. Link given below.
The wire that travels all the way to the end will be chopped off later. But DO NOT cut it off till the entire tail end of the horse is done. This will keep the ends intact or there is a chance of this unraveling when we add future rows.
Important: We will be bringing more wires from the spine to the back. But before doing that, find the two triangles that you made at the tail end.
To avoid creating a pentagon, instead of making a knot, insert the wires into each other as shown above.
Now go back to the middle part of the body (spine) again and use the wire from the knot there and bring it all the way to the end. Simply remember that whenever a hexagon shaped hole is about to be formed, weave the wire into the neighboring knot.
At this point:
- The gap at the top of the body will slowly close
- you will have only 4 wires coming out in the tail end.
- The spine would have grown in length and will now be 3 diamonds long.
- You will have 8 wires on each side ready to be cut.
Cut off all the wires that were inserted. Only 4 wires will be left and we will weave the horse’s tail with that.
Make a knot with the two left wires and another knot with the two right knots.
Then make a knot with wires coming out of these two knots and it will form a hexagon shaped hole (6 knots). Make knots with parallel wires and triangle shaped holes will be formed (circled in yellow).
Make one final knot with wires that cross each other and the tail is done. Tie the wire pieces with white rubber band or white thread. I have used yellow so that it is visible in photo.
Next we will weave the head/ face of the horse.
Weaving horse’s head/ face and mane
We have come to the final part of this tutorial. Right now, the spine of the horse will be 3 diamonds long. Make knots with wires that cross each other till the spine or top of the horse is 5 diamonds long.
You will see 3 wires traveling sideways from the spine. Make knots with the 2nd and 3rd wire and bring them from the spine to the face side.
Again, you have to avoid making pentagons so insert the wires when you face that situation.
Here is a closeup view.
After this, we will be bringing wire from the head/ nose end towards the back of the neck.
So turn the horse around so that it faces you and start weaving and bringing wires to the back of the neck.
Two wires (yellow arrow) will travel around the neck – one will travel on the left and another on the right.
Then they will meet on the other side (yellow circles).
Note how two pentagon shaped holes are formed on the back of the neck (blue arrow) This will make the neck grow vertically up.
Their wires will cross each other. make a knot with them and the neck will be one diamond tall.
Then bring another pair of wires from the front (face side) to the back.
Once the neck is one diamond tall, twist the wires and make knots as shown below.
Repeat this one more time – Wires will travel on left and right and when they both meet, turn the wires around and make the knots so that they look like steps in a staircase. This is done to control the direction of the horse’s mane.
Now it is time to weave the lower jaw of the horse. The front of the horse will now be 5 diamonds tall. Cut a leftover wire (21st wire) into two equal parts and add them to wires coming out of the topmost knot of the 5th diamond.
The new knots are inside yellow circles in the picture above. Make a knot with wires that cross each other and a diamond is formed. Next cut the 22nd wire/ last piece into two halves and add them to this knot.
So a total of 4 new wire pieces are added for the lower jaw region. The 4 circles show the 4 new wires that were added in this step.
This is how the lower jaw will look like. The tip of the jaw will have a set of parallel wires traveling left and another set traveling right.
Now we have to turn corners so that the shape of the nose is created. Make knots with the two parallel wires.
Two triangle shaped holes will be formed. Make a knot with two knots with we just made and a diamond is formed. This will be the tip of the mouth.
Again there will be a set of parallel wires traveling left and another set traveling right.
Make knots with parallel wires and two more triangle shaped holes will be formed. So the tip of the mouth will have a total of 4 triangle shaped holes exactly like the end of the legs.
The mouth is done. All we have to do now is bring the wires from the tip of the mouth to the back of the neck.
One wire will travel around the neck on the left and another will travel around the neck on the right. When they both meet, twist them and make the knot so the mane flows in the correct direction.
We have to make 6 such knots and they will look like steps on a staircase.
While you bring the wires from the tip of the mouth to the back, 2 pentagon shaped holes (5 knots) will be formed on each side of the horse and they have to be in the correct position.
Important note: If these pentagon shaped holes are not in the correct position as shown above (black arrows), the horse’s neck will not have proper shape.
So pay attention when you weave the next 2 rows (gray lines in image below).
Row 1 will form the 1st pentagon.
Before starting row 2, make the diamond at the end of the nose (red diamond) and then bring the wire to the back and it will form the 2nd pentagon in the correct position.
Continue weaving the sides of the face and the face will be 2 diamonds long at the top now and there will 6 knots at the back arranged like a staircase.
No more weaving. There will be 8 wires and you will make 4 jackfruit knots. Just join wires two by two with Jackfruit knot/ jasmine knot (Link given at the top of the page).
Cut the wires and insert the mane and horse is ready.
