Methi / Fenugreek hair pack can help arrest hair loss almost instantly. Though many of us are aware of this Indian beauty secret, we rarely apply this hair pack because it is messy and takes a long time to wash off from the hair.
In this tutorial, I am going to share tips that could make this process easier and also save you from the trouble of combing hair for a long time to remove all the leftover methi particles.
Tip 1: Soak in refrigerator
Methi is a fairly hard seed. It has to be soaked in water before we grind it.
The usual practice is to soak it over night and grind in the morning. But sometimes we get busy the next day or completely forget the little bowl till late in the afternoon. Methi gets spoilt very fast and it can cause quite a stink.
So, soak them in the refrigerator. This can stay in the refrigerator for 2 days. So, even if you are busy the next day, the soaked methi is waiting for you.
This paste can get heated up while grinding. Refrigerating before grinding will keep the paste cool.
Soak just 1.5 teaspoons and add a full cup of water. Methi expands in size. This amount is enough for hair that is mid-back length hair. Increase or decrease amount based on the length and thickness of your hair.
Tip 2: Grind to make a very fine paste
After soaking for at least 4 – 5 hours, grind it to a fine paste. This is important as it will reduce the amount of coarse particles stuck to the hair after washing. It might take a few more minutes but it will save you a lot of time while filtering and washing hair.
Tip 3: Grind with aloe vera / yogurt / buttermilk
While grinding, you can add aloe vera pieces or curd.
Aloe moisturizes the hair and helps hair grow faster and thicker.
Peel off the sides and
scoop out the gel like fleshy part.
Buttermilk is acidic and helps regulate scalp ph. We get dandruff when ph balance of scalp is disturbed. Milk proteins are also excellent hair conditioners.
Tip 4: Creamy milk like consistency
Another thing to be avoided is making a thick paste. The consistency of the ground paste should be watery and not thick. This methi mask dries super fast. So for our hair to get enough time to soak up all the nutrients, make sure it is creamy and not solid.
If necessary, add more water or aloe pieces to make sure it is almost watery.
You should be able to pour it easily.
Tip 5: Never forget to filter
Filtering will save you from the trouble of cleaning clogged shower drain and will also make washing this mask away from hair effortless.
A medium sieve mesh strainer will work best for this. A fine sieve mesh like tea filter will take too long.
Discard the coarse particles. These are the trouble makers.
Tip 6: Apply on clean washed hair
There is no rule against applying this mask on dirty or oily hair. But if possible, apply this as a post shampoo conditioner and you will see a difference in the conditioning effect of this mask.
Partition hair into sections and apply starting from the scalp all the way down the shaft of the hair. I usually make a bun at the top of my head. You can cover it with plastic cling wrap or shower cap to delay drying.
The mask can be left on the hair for 30 minutes to about 3 hours. One of my friends used to keep the mask on overnight.
Tip 7: Wash only with cold / room temperature water
Methi will get cooked in hot water and it will get stuck to hair. Though these tiny gel like particles can be removed by combing hair, it is better to avoid this situation.
Tip 8: Be gentle when washing the hair mask in the shower
If the mask is left on the hair for a longer duration, it will dry and make hair stiff. Do not disturb hair till it is completely wet again or hair will break. This applies for all hair and face masks. Make the hair and skin wet again before washing / wiping away the mask. Stand under the shower and allow the mask to become wet all over again. Then gently wash it away using your finger tips. Since we have filtered the paste, it will just wash away by itself effortlessly.
Even if there are a few methi particles stuck to hair, they will fall away on their own after hair dries or they can be gently combed out of hair.
Never comb wet hair as it is weakest when it is wet. Hair will break.
As much as possible air dry hair after gently removing excess water using a towel.
Another bad hair care habit is rubbing hair between two layers of towel to dry it. This will cause frizz, split ends and fly away hair.
Tip 9: Avoid shampoo / conditioner
Since we are applying the mask to clean hair, shampoo is not necessary. Simply wash it away with water. The conditioning effect of the hair mask will continue even after it has been washed away. So wait till next day to shampoo if possible.
Similarly, we don’t need a conditioner after rinsing away the mask. When soaked, methi produces mucilage that feels slippery. This slimy mucilage not only gives a natural slip to hair when combed, it also calms frizz.
A few variations of this hair mask
All natural homemade fenugreek / methi leave in conditioner / detangler
After soaking for a few hours, methi seeds will release slimy mucilage into the water. Even this can be used as a hair mask or leave in conditioner. You can store this water in a spray bottle in the refrigerator and spray it daily. It will provide a natural slippery feel when combing hair.
Methi hair oil
Another method to provide daily nourishment to root hair is to drop a few dry methi leaves into your hair oil and let it soak. If interested, warm up the oil a little bit so the nutrients seeps into the oil. These dry leaves can be found in Indian stores around the world. Ask for Kasuri methi.
If using fresh leaves, make a paste without adding water. Heat coconut oil and add the paste. Allow oil to simmer in low heat till the paste is dry and moisture has evaporated.
There are a few homemade herbal hair oil recipes in this website. You can use the search field to find them.
Methi powder hair mask
This is an easier version of the same hair mask that will help us skip the grinding and filtering part. Buy edible food grade fenugreek powder that is available in Indian stores. Powder sold purely for cosmetic reasons might be adulterated.
This powder also has to be soaked for at least one hour before you can apply it to your hair. The powder also expands in volume so use just 1 teaspoon of the powder and 1.5 cups of water and soak. Don’t soak the whole packet unless you have hair like Rapunzel.
One important tip to remember when applying methi hair mask is – Though it is a very effective method of stopping hair loss, it cools the body a lot so use it with caution during winter.
This is a mess free method of applying methi hair mask. I would love to hear your comments, tips and feedback after using this hair mask.
