This tutorial shows how you can weave this pooja basket (lotus pattern). This basket has a beautiful flower patterned base.
It is slightly more complicated that other box knot baskets so I believe that it is not suitable for beginners. If you have never made a basket before, please start your weaving journey with simpler baskets like
Once you are comfortable with those two baskets, you can try this one.
To show the shapes and weaving pattern clearly, I have used 3 colors in this demo. You can use 3 or 2 or even just 1 color.
Note: Link to video tutorial is given at the bottom of this page. Reading tips given in the written tutorial before watching video is advisable.
This basket is unique because part of it is made with running wire and part of it is woven diagonally.
Green wire – 3 meters each – 6 pieces (3 knots)
Blue wire – 2.5 meters each – 12 pieces (6 knots)
Pink wire – 2.5 meters each – 12 pieces (6 knots)
Make box knots with the cut pieces and keep them ready. Box knot tutorial is here.
Place the 3 green knots in position to form a hexagon.
The 3 green knots will be joined together to form a hexagon shape. Make knots with wires that intersect each other at points A, B and C.
As you can see in the picture above, you will notice 6 sets of wires radiating out from the center. Each set will have 2 wires.
Make knots with the wires in each set.
A triangle shaped gap will be formed.
Continue making those knots. After 6 knots, your hexagon will look like this.
This basket has cup shaped tapering legs. There will be a total of 12 legs in this basket.
There are 6 knots in the outermost row of the hexagon that we just made. Two legs will be attached to each one of these 6 knots.
Place a pink/ blue knot near one of the green knots in the hexagon.
Make knots with wires that intersect each other. Now you will notice that there are two parallel wires travelling towards the left and a similar set travelling towards the right.
Make knots with them. Triangle shaped gap will be formed.
Finally, you will see 2 green wires travelling parallel to each other. Make a knot with them.
You have now formed the first cup shaped tapering leg for the basket.
Add 5 more as shown below.
Now we have to fill the gap between the legs. Make knots with wires that cross each other.
You will be making a total of 4 knots in each gap.
Fill all the 6 gaps.
Now we have to add 6 more legs and the method is the same as the method shown above.
Second row of legs added right next to the previous one.
If using multi colors, make sure you match the colors properly.
All 12 legs have been added to the base of the basket.
Now we have to fill the gaps again.
Weave wires that cross each other. 2 lines done and 3 more to go.
A diamond will be formed. The top of the diamond will have pure green knot.
Fill all the 6 gaps.
All 6 gaps have been filled. Now the base of the basket is over and we will start weaving the sides.
Between 2 diamonds, you will see wires crossing each other.
Join them diagonally and form a pure pink triangle.
The next gap will have pure blue triangle.
You can see the sides growing now.
Continue weaving till you weave all 6 triangles – 3 pink and 3 blue.
Check to see if all the sides of the basket have grown equally. The height of the basket should reach the height of the pure green knots.
Next, with the running wire, make knots with all the wires. Usual choice is green for running wire. I chose pink.
As you join, you will see triangle and pentagon shaped gaps being formed between knots (seen in image below).
First round completed. Tuck in the starting end of the running wire as shown below.
Continue to the second round with the running wire.
Appearance after 2 rounds.
Appearance after 7 rounds. The two arrows point to the starting and ending point of the running wire.
You won’t be using running wire anymore. So you can cut it and tuck in the wire.
Next join two green wires to make a pure green knot. Then make knots with wires that are next to each other as shown below.
Make knots with wires that cross each other.
A triangle/ mountain with green knot as peak will be formed.
Repeat till you have 6 mountains.
In between 2 mountains, you will see wires crossing each other (seen above). Make knots with them and it will result in a diamond shape.
There will be one diamond formed between two mountains. There will be a total of 6 such diamonds.
Tuck in the excess wire.
Pooja basket is ready.
Inside view. Flower pattern is clearly visible in the base.
