This lacy mini handbag made with plastic wire/ paracord can be woven in a day. This tutorial shows how you can weave this with step by step images. Tubes have been used to create this lacy pattern.
The basket/ bag is diagonally woven so it does not require running wire.
The plastic tubes used in this basket are manufactured for this purpose. They are strong but flexible and can be cut with scissors. To make this basket, you can use these tubes or beads (like pony beads used in this flower vase). You might be tempted to use drinking straws. They wont be as strong as these tubes.
The tube pieces shown in the demo measure 3/4th of a cm. Try to keep their length uniform as much as possible.
Cut 20 pieces of wire, each measuring 1.5 meters each. This length depends on the length of the tubes, width and height of the bag. If you prefer to have a little excess wire when weaving or plan to add a couple more lines to increase height of basket, increase the length to 1.75 meters.
Since this basket is diagonally woven without running wire, if you make the basket broader by cutting more than 20 pieces of wire, you have to increase the length of the pieces as well.
The knot used is box knot/ square knot. Here is the tutorial for that knot.
Make knots with the cut pieces of wire. Two pieces of wire will be used for making one knot. So you will be having 10 knots now.
Each knot will have 4 strands of wire coming out. Add a tube to all 4 strands. While lacing the tubes through the wire, check whether all 4 strands are of equal length. If they are not, it means that the knot is not in the center. Loosen the knot and position it. This step is very important.
Next place two knots near each other as shown below.
They will have 2 sets of wires intersection each other (above and below).
Make knots with them.
Bring another knot and weave that also together with the previous two knots. Make knots with intersecting lines.
Base is ready. As you can see I have added all 10 knots to the base.
This bag does not have a base so we will turn the corner now itself.
Usually we make knots with wires that cross each other. But, to turn the corner, you have to make knots with two wires that are parallel to each other. Yellow arrows point to the 2 wires. You will find those parallel wires at both the ends of the base.
Make knots with them. A triangle shaped gap is formed.
Make the second knot and another triangle will be formed.
Make two triangles on the other end of the base as well.
As you can see below, there are a total of 4 triangle shaped gaps in this base (2 on the right end and 2 on the left end). You have now turned the corner and basket is ready to increase in height.
Make a knot at both ends as shown below.
The difficult part is over. Add tubes to a wire and knot it with the wire that is crossing over/ under it.
Continue making knots.
The corner will look like this.
Note: A basket cannot have more than 4 triangles. All other gaps should be diamonds/ squares only.
Bag is growing.
You can also have more than one tube on a wire if you think that will save time.
Inside of the basket will look like this.
You can stop at this point and convert it into a purse if you would prefer that.
I added a few more lines with tubes
and then added 3 lines without tubes. I only had wire enough for 3 lines. If you want to add more lines like this, increase wire length.
Tuck in the excess wire pieces.
Diameter decreased at the top.
Woven mini handbag is ready.
