This tutorial shows how you can weave the Jasmine bud/ Jackfruit knot (முல்லை/ பலாப்பழம் முடிச்சு).
As you can see in the picture below, this knot is different from the basic weaving knot (Box/square knot).
Jasmine knot is also taller than the basic knot.
Two pieces of wires will be used to make each knot.
Make a loop with the running wire.
Please pay attention to how the loop is made. In regular box knot, the bent half that shows the back side of the wire to us will be on the right. Here, it is on the left.
Wrap the second wire around the first loop. This forms the second loop.
In this loop also, the half that shows the back side of the wire in below the other half. In box knot, it will be above.
Fold the back side of the purple running wire up and make it pass through the first loop.
Now your knot will look like this.
Next, bend the back half of the yellow wire and make it pass through first loop and then through the second loop.
Gently pull all the 4 wires and you will be able to see the swirls formed by the wires.
As you can see above, each of the 4 loops will have one wire coming out of it.
Jasmine knot/ jackfruit knot is ready.
Adding second knot – Running wire
Now let us see how the second knot is added. Yellow is the running wire in this demo. Make a loop with it.
Note how the wire is bent with the bend half travelling above the previous knot.
Make the second loop with a new piece of purple.
Continue the knot exactly like the first knot. Fold the yellow running wire up and pass it through the first loop.
Your knot will loop like this.
Now fold the purple wire and pass it through first loop first and then through the second loop.
Tighten the knot.
Second knot is done.
Continue adding new purple wires to the running wire till you reach the desired length.
Adding second row – Running wire
To add the second row, you can use a running wire or join the wires diagonally. To add running wire, add a new piece of running wire as shown below.
This is how you will be making loops for weaving the second knot in the second row.
Second row complete.
You can see the spiky appearance of the knots. This is why it is called the jasmine bud or Jackfruit knot.
Reminds me of pinwheels.
Adding second row – Cross joining, No running wire
To weave the second row without running wire, place two knots near each other as shown below.
Make knots with wires that intersect each other. So you will be weaving one knot above and one knot below.
