This tutorial shows how you can weave the square knot which is one of the most commonly used knot in macrame.
Depending on the side in which the head of the knot is located, we call it a left or right square knot. In the picture above, all 3 knots are left square knots. The head is the vertical line that goes over two horizontal cords. In the picture below, you can see the (green) heads clearly.
Method for macrame square knot
I am going to use 2 colors in this demo to make it easier to follow. To make this knot, we need two cords and one or more filler cords in the middle.
In this demo, I have started by adding a pink and green cord to the white holding cord with a lark’s head knot or cow hitch knot. Click the given link if you want the tutorial for Lark’s head knot.
Since there are 4 cords, the left most and the right most cords will be used for making the square knot (hence called working cords) while the two cords in the middle will be used as filler cords.
Left square knot:
Fold the left most pink working cord to the right so that it resembles the number 4.
Bring the right most green cord above the folded pink cord.
Then fold the green cord and pass it under the pink working cord and both the filler cords and bring it out on the left side as shown in the picture below.
Pull both cords with equal tension and tighten the knot.
What we have now completed is a half square knot. If we repeat the above step, we will be creating the spiral stitch / Half knot spiral.
To complete the square knot, we have to repeat the same procedure but this time, we will start by folding the rightmost working cord.
So fold the pink working cord like the number 4.
Pass the green working cord over pink working cord and then under the pink working cord as well as the two filler cords.
Pull both cords with uniform tension.
Macrame square knot is complete.
Left and right square knots: What we have created is a left square knot as the head of the knot is on the left. To make the left square knot, we started with the left working cord. To create a right square knot, we have to start with the right working cord.
Double square knot: Add one more square knot right below this square knot and we will have the double square knot.
So fold the leftmost pink working cord like the number 4.
Bring the rightmost green working knot over the pink working cord and then under the pink working cord and the filler cords.
Pull ends of both cords and tighten the knot.
Now we have to fold the rightmost cord.
Pass the leftmost cord over and then under the pink working cord and also below the filler cords.
Continue till you reach the desired length.
