Tutorial shows how you can weave the gooseberry knot/ pinwheel knot/ flower knot/ amla knot (நெல்லிக்காய் முடிச்சு) used for making wire baskets.
Baskets made with this knot are more closely knit than baskets made with other knots. They are also long lasting.
For each knot, we need 3 pieces of wire. I am going to use 3 different colors (pink, blue and white) so it will be easy to follow the steps.
Pink is the running wire. Make a loop with the running wire as shown below.
Wrap the second wire around the loop formed by the first wire.
Wrap the third wire around the two loops as shown below.
This will not form a loop like the first two wires. So wrap it around the two loops tightly as shown above. If this is loose, it will be difficult for you to manage all 3 pieces of wires if you are new to basket weaving.
Next we will be folding the wire pieces like the English letter N. Fold the first wire (pink) up as shown below.
Fold the second wire (blue) and it passes through the first loop as shown below.
Fold the third wire (white) and it passes through both the loops as shown below.
Tighten the knot.
Amla knot is ready.
There are 6 loops/ petals in this flower knot/ amla knot and each loop will have a wire coming out of it.
Adding more knots – using running wire
When making baskets with this knot, we will be using a running wire. So I am going to show how you can add the second knot.
Pink wire is the running wire.
Fold the running wire/ first wire (pink).
Wrap a second wire (blue) around the first loop.
Wrap the third wire (white) around the first two loops.
The method for making the second knot is the same as shown above.
Fold first wire/ running wire up (pink).
Fold second wire (blue) and pass it through the firt loop as shown below.
Fold third wire (white) and pass it through both the loops as shown below.
Tighten the knot and place it near the first knot.
Make sure the knots are not too loose.
While weaving, tighten the knots in the previous row before you add the next row on top of it as this knot tends to become loose.
Important note: Mistakes to be avoided while weaving this knot
If using more than one color, you have to make sure that you add the colors in proper sequence.
If the colors are not added in proper sequence, the knots will not identical as demonstrated above.
As you can see in the picture below, the white wires are travelling parallel to each other and blue wires are travelling parallel to each other. Pink is the running wire.
To add second row
To add next row, the knots have to be placed between two knots in the previous row. Triangle shaped gaps will be formed between knots of adjacent rows.
This is a difficult knot so please try this at least a couple of times before attempting a big basket.
