In this tutorial, I will show how you can make the square knot, also called the box knot using plastic wire (/ cane wire as it is popularly called in India).
This knot is the most commonly used knot in basket weaving. So if you are new to basket weaving, try this a few times before you proceed to make baskets.
You will need two pieces of wire. Fold them and make loops. Place one loop around the other as shown below.
Fold up the vertical yellow wire so that it looks like the English letter N.
Now weave the horizontal pink wire as shown below. It will resemble the English letter Z.
Knot is done.
So the first knot is done. What about the second knot? There are two methods for adding the second knot.
- Using running wire
- Diagonal joining
Method 1: Running wire
The pink wire is the running wire in this demo.
Fold the pink and form a loop.
Take a new yellow wire to make the second knot.
Adjust and tighten knot making sure it sits right next to the previous one.
Method 2: Diagonal Joining
In this method, we take two separate box knots and place them right next to each other.
As you can see, two pink wires are intersecting each other (above) and two yellow wires are intersecting each other (below).
Form knots with them.
To increase height and width, we simply have to keep adding more knots.
The same knot can be made using paracord.
