This tutorial shows how you can weave the box knot variation. This weaving pattern creates narrow diamond shaped gaps between the knots vs the square shaped gaps formed between regular box/square knots.
The narrow diamonds can be seen clearly when a single color is used and the tiled/ checkered pattern is created when two colors are used. The tiles looks great when 2 contrasting colors are used.
You must know to weave the box/ square knot to create this pattern. So please check this tutorial if you are not familiar with that basic weaving knot.
Fold wire to form a loop as shown below.
The (green) running wire will come from the left. Wrap it over the loop and then fold it to make a shape that resembles the English letter S.
Now fold the back side of the first (red) wire up and weave it through the loop formed by the running wire as shown below.
Pull all 4 ends gently to tighten the knot.
Box knot variation is done. At first glance, this knot might look exactly like the regular box knot. Please continue reading to find out how they both are different.
Comparison between box knot and box knot variation
I have placed the two knots near each other for easy comparison. Can you spot the difference?
Clue: Note the direction in which the red and green wires enter and exit the knot.
I am going to show side by side the steps we follow to weave both the knots so you can see the difference.
Adding second knot with running wire
To create this pattern, we have to add one regular box knot followed by one box knot variation followed by one regular knot etc.
Purple is the running wire that will travel from left to right. We will be adding one orange wire piece for each knot.
So we start with a regular box/ square knot.
Next add a box knot variation.
Note the narrow V that is being formed.
Next add a regular knot.
Next comes the box knot variation.
Adding second line with running wire
To add the next line, we will take another piece of purple running wire. Since the first knot in the previous line was a regular knot, in this line, the first knot should be a variation knot.
Next add a regular knot.
Long narrow diamond formed.
Continue adding the knots.
After 4 rows.
Comparison between the two patterns – Square shaped gaps vs long narrow diamonds.
Here is the video tutorial for creating this – checkered pattern with box knot and its variation.
Next we will see how we can weave these knots without running wire.
Joining 2 knots with box knot variation knot – Cross weaving (without running wire)
Here is an easy to understand collage that shows in 8 steps how you can weave the box knot variation knot easily without running wire.
Here we are joining two box knots with variation knots. This method was used to weave a basket without running wire. You can find the tutorial for that basket here – Box knot variation basket – cross weaving.
