This tutorial shows how you can weave this red and white checkered basket.
To weave this basket, you have to know how to weave two knots
- Box knot – Written tutorial and YouTube video tutorial.
- Box knot variation – Written tutorial and YouTube video tutorial.
- White running wire – To weave sides of basket.
- Red running wire – To weave base of basket.
- Red wire pieces – 20 pieces of red wire – 2 meters each (for medium sized basket) OR 30 pieces of red wire – 2 meters each (for regular sized basket).
The length is same for both sizes of baskets as the height is going to be the same anyway.
The basket that I am going to show has 8 rows in its base. 2 meters is more than enough even if you want to have 12 rows of base for a broader basket.
(A link to the video tutorial for this basket can be found at the bottom of this page).
Leave 100 cms of red running wire free and start adding the cut wire pieces one by one. The first knot will be box knot so the second knot will be variation knot etc.
All wire pieces have been added to the running wire. Leave 100 cms and cut the running wire.
Make a knot to identify the row that we just finished as this has to be the middle row of the base. All future rows will be added above and below it.
As you can see in the picture above, since the first row started with box knot, the second row will start with its variation knot.
4 rows have been added above the middle row and 3 rows have been added below the middle row. The base has a total of 8 rows now.
The base is done and now we are ready to turn the 4 corners and start weaving the sides of the basket.
For the sides, to create the checkered pattern, we have to change the color of the running wire to white.
So cut the red running wire in the 8th row of the base as shown below.
Add the white running wire and continue weaving.
Both the white and the cut red running wires will travel together for the next couple of knots.
Finish the 8th row of the base.
Tuck in the short white wire before turning the corners.
To turn corner, simply continue making knots with the white running wire as shown below.
As you can see, the holes are not diamond. This will not be visible as it is very close to the base. The holes will be diamonds from the next round.
Don’t try to fix this problem by altering the knot pattern which should always be box knot, then box knot variation, then box knot and then box knot variation etc.
The long sides however will have diamond shaped holes.
One round has been finished around the base. Each corner will have a triangle formed by 3 knots. One such corner is visible in the picture below.
To make the basket grow, all you have to do is continue weaving more rows around the base.
Second row has diamond holes.
Basket is growing.
After every row, check to make sure that you are having red and white checks.
Once basket reaches the desired height, tuck in the excess wire into the 3rd knot as we will be pulling the tucked in wire tightly to fold the last row inward.
Top row has folded inward.
Each tucked in wire has to be passed through at least 5 knots to keep them secure. Then you can chop off the excess.
Checkered basket is ready.
