This tutorial shows how you can make this diagonally woven plastic wire basket (குறுக்கு முடிச்சு கூடை போடுவது எப்படி). In this basket, we will not be using running wire.
There are two methods for weaving the base of this basket. This tutorial shows the version that is slightly harder.
Green wire – 20 pieces – 3.5 meters
Blue wire – 20 pieces – 3.5 meters
We will be cutting 8 more pieces of wire later. I will explain that in detail later.
This base of the basket is narrow and has 11 rows. So if you want a broader base, you have to cut more than 3.5 meters and the length will depend on the number of additional rows that you will be adding to the base.
Weaving the basket base
To make this basket, it is necessary that you know to weave the square knot (box knot). Click the link to open a detailed tutorial for box knot. That tutorial also shows how you can join two box knots.
Make knots with the cut pieces of wire. We will be making 10 blue and 10 green knots.
Join two knots as shown below.
Make more of the above shown diamond shape and keep ready. You will have 5 blue and 5 green diamonds.
Join the diamonds.
The colors have to alternate.
These will be the middle rows of the base.
But this base is too thin so we will make it broader by adding more lines above and below these middle rows.
Make a knot with wires that are crossing each other like the English alphabet X. Picture below shows the line that is forming above the middle rows.
5 rows above middle row and 5 rows below middle row.
The base will now look like an elongated hexagon.
Usually in diagonally woven baskets, the two triangles at both the ends of the base will be folded up while turning the corner. This will give a rectangle shaped base. That is the easier method for this basket.
But I wanted to show the harder version as well so I have added this tutorial. So let’s get started.
We have to convert this elongated hexagon into a rectangle.
As you can see in the picture below, the left end has been changed.
We have to fill the space inside the yellow square shown below.
For that, we will be adding new wire. To make it easier to visually discriminate, I have shown how this is done using white wire.
As you can see, I have added 4 white wires.
So cut 4 green and 4 blue wire pieces. Each piece will measure 3.5 meters.
When adding new wire, don’t forget to maintain the color pattern of the rest of the base.
According to the pattern that I have chosen for my basket, I have to use 2 green wires now.
Add the new wire so that it forms the rectangle.
The first green wire will be added with 4 knots and the second green wire will be added with 2 knots.
Repeat the same with two more green wires on the other side of the triangle.
Again, the first wire will be added with 4 knots and second wire will be added with 2 knots.
The base is now rectangle in shape.
The base is complete. Now we have to turn the corner.
Turning the basket corner
To weave the sides of the basket, we have to first turn the corner. A basket will usually have 4 corners.
You will see a set of parallel wires at the 4 corners of the base.
Make a knot with the two wires and a triangle shaped gap will be formed between the three knots.
Yellow arrow in the picture below, shows the two parallel wires in the second corner of the base.
Repeat the same at the other end of the base as well.
4 corners have been turned.
Weaving the sides of the basket
The difficult part is over. To weave the sides of the basket, all we have to do is, find wires that are crossing each other and make a knot with them.
Closeup view of wires that are crossing each other.
As you continue to make knots, the basket will grow.
After a few rows, you can see the basket taking shape.
